This week on the West Texas Pathfinders GMRS Net, we will be talking about Silent Monitoring — one of the most underrated radio skills.
Strong operators don’t just know how to talk…They know how to listen with purpose.
The Challenge:
Before you key up, try this:
Monitor your primary or alternate GMRS channel for 15 minutes a day — without transmitting.
Just listen.
Pay attention to:
- Traffic flow
- Signal strengths
- Repeater courtesy tones
- Background noise
- Who’s active and when
- How operators pass information
Situational awareness starts with discipline. In a real emergency, listening first can make all the difference.
Next net, be ready to share what you heard.
